It is a Commandment of Hashem to occupy the Land and drive out its inhabitants. It is a Commandment of Hashem to defeat and kill our enemies, for they are the enemies of our Judge; their ways cannot be ours. The Land must adhere to the Rule of G-d, for only by the Spirit of Hashem can Israel exist.
Who are those that question us, in derision of our Judge? The nations that slaughtered us, while we stood at their mercy. They have compassion for the murderer, but they despise the victim. They stood silent while Israel was attacked all around, and only spoke out to condemn our survival. Of all the nations, only America is worthy of its rebuke, for all it has achieved in the pursuit of truth and justice. Yet the Americans should recall their inception; how they came to exist in the land of the Indian--and did G-d command them? Israel will not betray its Covenant. It will destroy and drive out its enemies; none will remain to taunt us and mock the Rule of G-d. This is the Commandment of our Judge. It is either them or us.
"...Hashem Said to Moses, 'Write this as a remembrance in the Book and recite it in the ears of Joshua, that I Shall Surely Erase the memory of amalek from under the heavens.' Moses built an altar and called its name 'Hashem is My Miracle;' and he said, 'For the Hand is on the Throne of G-d: Hashem maintains a war against amalek, from generation to generation.'" (Exodus 17:14-16).
Conquest
"Israel sent emissaries to Sichon, king of the Amorite, saying, 'Let us pass through your land; we shall not turn off to field or vineyard; we shall not drink well water; on the king's road shall we travel, until we pass through your border.' But Sichon did not permit Israel to pass through his border, and Sichon assembled his entire people and went out against Israel to the wilderness. He arrived at Yahtzah and waged war against Israel. Israel smote him with the edge of the sword and took possession of his land, from Arnon to Yabok to the children of Ammon--for the border of the children of Ammon was powerful. Israel took all these cities, and Israel settled in all the Amorite cities, in Cheshbon and all its suburbs. For Cheshbon--it was the city of Sichon, king of the Amorite; and he had warred against the first king of Moav and took all his land from his control, until Arnon..." (Numbers 21:21-26).
"Israel settled in the land of the Amorite. Moses sent to spy out Ragel and they conquered its suburbs; and he drove away the Amorite that was there. They turned and ascended by way of the Bashan; Og, king of Bashan, went out against them, he and his entire people, to do battle at Edrei. Hashem Said to Moses, 'Do not fear him, for into your hand Have I Given him, his entire people, and his land; you shall do to him as you did to Sichon, king of the Amorite, who dwells in Cheshbon.' They smote him, his sons, and all his people, until there was no survivor left of him, and they took possession of his land." (Numbers 21:31-35).
The Curse and the Blessing
Moav and the Midian sent for Balaam, the prophet of the nations, to curse Israel, but G-d Turned his curse to a Blessing:
"...From Aram, Balak, king of Moav, led me, from the mountains of the east, 'Come curse Jacob for me, come bring anger upon Israel.' How can I curse?--G-d has not cursed. How can I anger?--Hashem is not angry. For from its origins, I see it rock-like, and from hills do I see it. Behold! it is a nation that will dwell in solitude and not be reckoned among the nations. Who has counted the dust of Jacob or numbered a quarter of Israel? May my spirit die the death of the Upright, and may my end be like his!" (Numbers 23:7-10).
"G-d is not a man the He should be deceitful, nor a son of man that He should relent. Would He Say and not do, or Speak and not confirm? Behold! to bless have I received--He Has Blessed, and I shall not contradict it. He Perceived no iniquity in Jacob, and Saw no perversity in Israel. Hashem his Judge Is with him, and the Friendship of the King is in him. It is G-d Who Brought them out of egypt according to the Power of His Loftiness, for there is no divination in Jacob and no sorcery in Israel. Even now it is Said to Jacob and Israel what G-d Has Wrought. Behold! the people will arise like a lion cub and raise itself like a lion; it will not lie down until it consumes prey, and drinks the blood of the slain." (Numbers 23:19-24).
"How goodly are your tents, O Jacob, your dwelling places, O Israel; stretching out like brooks, like gardens by a river, like aloes Planted by Hashem, like cedars by water. Water shall flow from his wells, and his seed shall be by abundant waters. His king shall be Exalted over Agag, and his kingdom shall be Upraised. It Is G-d Who Brought him out of egypt according to the Power of His Loftiness. He will consume the nations that oppress him and crush their bones, and his arrows shall pierce them. He crouched and lay down like a lion, and, like a lion cub--who can stand him up? Those who bless you are blessed and those who curse you are accursed." (Numbers 24:5-9).
"...Come, I shall advise you what this people will do to your people in the End of Days... 'I shall see him, but not now, I shall look at him, but it is not near. A star has issued from Jacob and a scepter-bearer has risen from Israel, and he shall pierce the nobles of Moav and undermine the children of Seth. Edom shall be a conquest and Seir will be the conquest of his enemies--and Israel will attain success. One from Jacob shall rule and destroy the remnant of the city.' He saw amalek and declaimed his parable and said: 'Amalek is the first among nations [to challenge Israel], but its end will be eternal destruction.' He saw the Kenite and declaimed his parable and said: 'Strong is your dwelling, and set in a rock in your nest. For if the Kenite should be lain waste, till where can Assyria take you captive?' He declaimed his parable and said: 'Oh! Who will survive when He Imposes these! Big ships from the coast of Kittim will afflict Assyria and afflict the other bank--and it, too, will be forever destroyed.'" (Numbers 24:14,17-24).
Battle with Moav and Midia
Balaam could not curse Israel, for the Word of G-d was only to Bless. So Balaam advised Moav and the Midians to lead Israel astray, by seducing its people with harlotry, in the manner of their gods; and a plague broke out upon Israel. Those who sinned died by the plague, and G-d Commanded Israel to take vengeance and destroy the Midianites along with the deceit of Moav. A thousand from each tribe went out and smote the Midian, but they spared the women and children. "Moses, Elazar the Kohen, and all the leaders of the assembly went out to meet them outside the camp. Moses was angry with the commanders of the army, the officers of the thousands and the officers of the hundreds, who came from the legion of the battle. Moses said to them, 'Did you let every female live? Behold!--it was they who caused the children of Israel, by the word of Balaam, to commit a betrayal against Hashem regarding the matter of peor; and the plague occurred in the assembly of Hashem. So now, kill every male among the young children, and every woman fit to know a man by lying with a male, you shall kill. But all the young children among the women who have not known lying with a male, you may keep alive for yourselves. And as for you, encamp outside the camp for a seven-day period; whoever killed a person or touched a corpse, you shall purify yourselves on the third day and on the seventh day--you and your captives. And every garment, every vessel of hide, everything made of that which comes from goat hair, and every vessel of wood, you shall purify...'" (Numbers 31:13-20).
Division of spoils
"Hashem Said to Moses, Saying: Calculate the total of the captured spoils, of people and animals, you, Elazar the Kohen, and the heads of the fathers of the assembly. Divide the spoils in half, between those who undertook the battle, who go out to the army, and the entire assembly. You shall raise up a tribute to Hashem from the men of war who go out to the army, one living being of five hundred, from the people, from the cattle, from the donkeys, and from the flock. You shall take it from their half and give it to Elazar the Kohen, as a portion of Hashem. And from the half of the children of Israel you shall take one drawn from fifty, from the people, from the cattle, from the donkeys, from the flock--from all the animals--and you shall give them to the Levites, the guardians of the Charge of Hashem's Tabernacle..." (Numbers 31:25-30).
The Miracle of Israel
"The commanders of the thousands in the legions, the officers of the thousands, and the officers of the hundreds, approached Moses. They said to Moses, 'Your servants took a census of the men of war under our command, and not a man of us is missing. So we have brought an offering for Hashem...'" (Numbers 31:48-51).
Destruction of Sichon
"Hashem Said to me: See, I Have Begun to Deliver before you Sichon and his land; begin to drive out, to possess his land. Sichon went out toward us--he and his entire people--for battle, to Yahtzah. Hashem, our G-d, Gave him before us, and we smote him and his sons and his entire people. We captured all his cities at that time, and we destroyed every populated city, with the women and small children; we did not leave a survivor. Only the animals did we loot for ourselves, and the booty of the cities that we captured: from Aroer, which is by the shore of Arnon Brook, and the city that is by the brook, and until Gilead--there was no city that was too strong for us; Hashem, our G-d, Gave everything before us. Only to the land of the children of Ammon did you not draw near, everywhere near Yabok Brook and the cities of the mountain, and everywhere that Hashem, our G-d, Commanded us." (Deuteronomy 2:31-37).
Destruction of Og
"We turned and ascended by way of the Bashan, and Og king of Bashan went out toward us, he and his entire people, for war at Edrei. Hashem Said to me: Do not fear him, for in your hand Have I Given him and his entire people and his land, and you shall do to him as you did to Sichon king of the Amorite, who dwells in Cheshbon. Hashem, our G-d, Gave into our hand also Og king of the Bashan and his entire people, and we smote him until no survivor was left of him. We captured all his cities at that time; there was no city that we did not take from them--sixty cities, the entire region of Argov--the kingdom of Og in the Bashan. All these were fortified cities, with a high wall, doors and bar, aside from open cities, very many. We destroyed them, as we did to Sichon king of Cheshbon, destroying every populated city, the women and small children. And all the animals and the booty of the cities we looted for ourselves. At that time we took the land from the hand of the two kings of the Amorite that were on the other side of the Jordan, from Arnon Brook to Mount Chermon..." (Deuteronomy 3:1-8).
Conquest of Land
"I commanded Joshua at that time, saying, 'Your eyes have seen everything that Hashem, your G-d, Has Done to these two kings; so will Hashem Do to all the kings where you cross over. You shall not fear them, for Hashem, your G-d--He Shall Wage war for you.'" (Deuteronomy 3:21-22). "These are the Decrees and the Ordinances that you shall observe to perform in the Land that Hashem, the G-d of your forefathers, Has Given you, to possess it, all the days that you live on the Land. You shall utterly destroy all the places where the nations that you are driving away worshipped their gods; on the high mountains and on the hills, and under every leafy tree. You shall break apart their altars; you shall smash their pillars; and their sacred trees shall you burn in the fire; their carved images shall you cut down; and you shall obliterate their names from that place." (Deuteronomy 12:1-3).
"When Hashem, your G-d, will Bring you to the Land to which you come to possess it, and He Will Thrust many nations from before you...and Hashem, your G-d, Will Deliver them before you, and you will smite them--you shall utterly destroy them; you shall not seal a covenant with them nor shall you show them favor. You shall not intermarry with them; you shall not give your daughter to his son, and you shall not take his daughter for your son, for he will cause your child to turn away from after Me and they will serve other judges; then Hashem's Wrath will burn against you, and He will destroy you quickly. Rather, so shall you do to them: Their altars shall you break apart; their pillars shall you smash; their sacred trees shall you cut down; and their carved images shall you burn in fire." (Deuteronomy 7:1,2-5). "Perhaps you will say in your heart, 'These nations are more numerous than I; how will I be able to drive them out?' Do not fear them! You shall remember what Hashem, your G-d, Did to pharaoh and to all of egypt. The Great Tests that your eyes saw, and the Signs, the Wonders, the Strong Hand, and the Outstretched Arm with which Hashem, your G-d, Took you out--so Shall Hashem, your G-d, Do to all the peoples before whom you fear. Also the hornet-swarm Will Hashem, your G-d, Send among them, until the survivors and hidden ones perish before you. You shall not be broken before them, for Hashem, your G-d is Among you, A Great and Awesome G-d." (Deuteronomy 7:17-21).
"For if you will observe this Entire Commandment that I Command you, to perform it, to love Hashem, your Judge, to walk in His Ways and to cleave to Him, Hashem Will Drive out these nations from before you, and you will drive out nations larger and mightier than you. Every place where the sole of your foot will tread shall be yours--from the Wilderness and the Lebanon, from the River, the Euphrates River, until the Western Sea shall be your boundary. No man will stand up against you; Hashem, your G-d, Will Set your terror and fear on the entire face of the earth where you will tread, as He Spoke to you." (Deuteronomy 11:22-25).
Laws of the Army
Marry new wife: "When a man marries a new wife, he shall not go out to the army, nor shall it obligate him for any matter; he shall be free for his home for one year, and he shall gladden his wife whom he has married." (Deuteronomy 24:5).
Trumpet blasts: "When you go out to wage war in your Land against an enemy who oppresses you, you shall sound short blasts of the trumpets, and you shall be Recalled before Hashem, your G-d, and you Shall Be Saved from your foes." (Numbers 10:9).
Be Strong: "When you go out to the battle against your enemy, and you see horse and chariot--a people more numerous than you--you shall not fear them, for Hashem, your G-d, Is With you, Who Brought you up from the land of egypt. It shall be that when you draw near to the war, the Kohen shall approach and speak to the people. He shall say to them, 'Hear, O Israel, you are coming near to the battle against your enemies; let your heart not be faint; do not be afraid, do not panic, and do not be broken before them. For Hashem, your G-d, Is The One Who Goes with you, to Fight for you with your enemies, to Save you.'
"Then the officers shall speak to the people, saying, 'Who is the man who has built a new house and has not inaugurated it? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the war and another man will inaugurate it. And who is the man who has planted a vineyard and not redeemed it? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the war and another man will redeem it. And who is the man who has betrothed a woman and not married her? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the war and another man will marry her.' The officers shall continue speaking to the people and say, 'Who is the man who is fearful and fainthearted? Let him go and return to his home, and let him not melt the heart of his brothers, like his heart.' When the officers have finished speaking to the people, the leaders of the legions shall take command at the head of the people." (Deuteronomy 20:1-9).
Overtures of peace: "When you draw near to a city to wage war against it, you shall call out to it for peace. It shall be that if it responds to you in peace and opens for you, then the entire people found within it shall be as tribute for you, and they shall serve you. But if it does not make peace with you, but makes war with you, you shall besiege it. Hashem Shall Deliver it into your hand, and you shall smite all its males by the blade of the sword. Only the women, the small children, the animals, and everything that will be in the city--all its booty--may you plunder for yourselves; you shall eat the booty of your enemies, which Hashem, your G-d, Gave you. So shall you do to all the cities that are very distant from you, which are not the cities of these nations." (Deuteronomy 20:10-15).
Destroy inhabitants of Land: "But from the cities of these peoples that Hashem, your G-d, Gives you as an inheritance, you shall not allow any person to live. Rather you shall utterly destroy them...as Hashem, your G-d, Has Commanded you, so that they will not teach you to act according to all their abominations that they performed for their judges, and you would sin against Hashem, your Judge." (Deuteronomy 20:16-17,17-18).
Care for Land: "When you besiege a city for many days to wage war against it to seize it, do not destroy its trees by swinging an ax against them, for from it you will eat, and you shall not cut it down. Is the tree of the field a man that it should enter the siege before you? Only a tree that you know is not a food tree, it you may destroy and cut down, and build a bulwark against the city that makes war with you, until it is conquered." (Deuteronomy 20:19-20).
Female captive: "When you will go to war against your enemies, and Hashem, your G-d, Will Deliver him into your hand, and you will capture his captivity; and you will see among its captivity a woman who is beautiful of form, and you will desire her, you may take her to yourself for a wife. You shall bring her to the midst of your house; she shall shave her head and let her nails grow. She shall remove the garment of her captivity from upon herself and sit in your house and she shall weep for her father and her mother for a full month; thereafter you may come to her and live with her, and she shall be a wife to you. But it shall be that if you do not desire her, then you shall send her on her own, but you may not sell her for money; you shall not enslave her, because you have afflicted her." (Deuteronomy 21:10-14).
Sanctity of war camp: "When a camp goes out against your enemies, you shall guard against anything evil. If there will be among you a man who will not be clean because of a nocturnal occurrence, he shall go outside the camp; he shall not enter the midst of the camp. When it will be toward evening, he shall immerse himself in the water, and when the sun sets, he may enter the midst of the camp. You shall have a place outside the camp, and to it shall you go out. You shall have a shovel in addition to your weapons, and it will be that when you sit outside, you shall dig with it; you shall go back and cover your excrement. For Hashem, your G-d, Walks in the midst of your camp to Rescue you and to Deliver your enemies before you; so your camp shall be Holy, so that He will not See a shameful thing among you and Turn Away from behind you." (Deuteronomy 23:10-15).
Protect and harbor refugees: "You shall not turn over to his master a slave who is rescued from his master to you. He shall dwell with you in your midst, in whatever place he will choose in one of your cities, which is beneficial to him; you shall not taunt him." (Deuteronomy 23:16-17). A person who will flee to us from amongst our enemies all around, or any refugee who seeks refuge amongst us, will be treated like a brother, and will live amongst us as a part of Israel, abiding by the Laws of G-d. Only the inhabitants of the Land, and those who despise the Rule of G-d, will not be tolerated and will not be given refuge--they will be driven out and destroyed, that none should remain amongst us.
Be strong and courageous: "...You shall do to them according to the Entire Commandment that I Have Commanded you. Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid and do not be broken before them, for Hashem, your G-d--it Is He Who Goes before you, He will not release you nor will He forsake you." (Deuteronomy 31:5-6). Only if we forsake Hashem, and are afraid to act according to all He Has Commanded--only then will our enemies do to us as Hashem Has Planned for them. For if we tolerate the ways of our enemies, it is a betrayal of our Judge. If we let them live amongst us, then the Land will reject us; for showing favor to them and their behavior, we would be Banned like them, having betrayed the Covenant and the Laws of G-d.
